This video is about the pollution of the atmosphere from buildings, cities and factories.

We emit 23 billions tons of carbon dioxide in the ozone layer.

There are 6.5 billion people on Earth.

A lot of people travel by car so they pollute a lot.

We must travel by public transport. We should travel by bus instead of traveling by car.

Nuclear and oils plants emit too much toxic fumes.

Renewable energies are better than fossil fuels.

Because of the greenhouse effects, polar bears are dying

Thanks to renewable energies, we can do something for the environment

Carpooling can help to fight global warming

We must change our ways.

Unit 2 – Global WarNing! Grammar Memo

1) Whereas > Alors que / Tandis que

Unlike / Contrary to > Contrairement à

We use ‘whereas, unlike, contrary’ to to express the opposition.

Unlike hybrid cars, ordinary cars pollute .

Solar panels produce energy whereas factories consume energy.

Contrary to buses, bikes don’t emit CO2 / are eco friendly .

2) Both > Les deux

so do/ does x > Tout comme x

the same as > le(s) même que

We use ‘both, so do / does x, the same as’ to express similarities.

I like reading, so does Théo.

I have same tastes in books as Théo.

3) There is + sg / there are + pl.

> il y a

There are people watching reality TV shows on this image.

4) Too much + indénombrable # too many + dénombrable

Too much pollution.

Too many polar bears.

5) Instead of + N or V- ing ?

Au lieu de

We should cycle instead of driving .

We should use solar panels instead of factories.

6) Thanks to # Because of ?

Grace à # à cause de

Thanks to solar panels, we can save energy.

Because of factories, the Earth is in danger.

7) Present – Ing?

– Auxiliary Is / Are + V- Ing .

We use the present-ing to describe current situations. Current : actuel Actually = en réalité / Currently = actuellement

We can translate it by “en train de” in French.

Sea levels are rising because of the greenhouse effect.

8) Present Perfect?

– Auxiliary has / have + past participle (regular / irregular)

We use the present perfect to express a link between the past and the present .

We can translate it by the “présent” in French.

Ecosystems have disappeared so polar bears are endangered.

Les écosystèmes disparaissent / ont disparus donc les ours polaires sont en danger.

9) FOR / SINCE + present perfect.

There are 2 ways to say ‘depuis’ in English.

We use “Since” for starting points.

We use “For” for durations.

I have been a teacher for 10 years.

I have been a teacher since 2003.

10) Preterite?

We use the preterite to talk about past dated and finished actions.

We can translate it with “passé composé” in French.

Guillaume broke his arm 10 days ago.

G. s’est cassé le bras il y a 10 jours.

Revise irregular verbs !
